Big lift: Heat recovery steam generator modules at Deer Creek Station

Big lift: Heat recovery steam generator modules at Deer Creek Station Video Clips. Duration : 2.58 Mins.

At the Deer Creek Station, they have a Heat Recover Steam Generator (HRSG), rather than a boiler. And there are 14 HRSG modules inside the HRSG casing. Today, we're going to see them lift up a HRSG module, and using three cranes, drop it in the top of that casing. Lifting a HRSG module requires balance... Balance between horsepower ... and man power... Balance between getting the job done ... and getting it done safely. (Darrell Morris): "It's an hour and a half from start to finish. It's a pretty smooth operation." Darrell Morris is the job rigging superintendent for Boldt Construction. Boldt lifts each module off the trailer, into its slingback, and up into the air vertically. It takes more than 20 workers to do a lift... including the guys who play tug-of-war with the module. (Darrell Morris): "Those modules are 70 foot long, and they catch a lot of wind. So, yeah, you gotta keep a lot of tension on the rope, so, again, so the module doesn't start swinging, twisting." The HRSG casing is more than 80 feet tall. All 14 modules fit inside, side by side. Gary Hager is a Basin Electric mechanical field engineer on site. He explains how the HRSG fits in at this combined cycle power plant. (Gary Hager): "You've got the gas turbine spinning, and it's turning a generator. You've got the gas out of the gas turbine making steam in this boiler. And then it's steam into the steam turbine, which is spinning another generator, which gives us the rest of the megawatts we need." The ...
